What are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is not a prosthetic tooth, but more specifically a prosthetic tooth root. A tiny titanium post is placed into the jaw where a tooth used to reside, and there, it bonds with the bone through a process called osseointegration. Then, it is topped with a crown, bridge, or denture. Because the new tooth is based below the gum line just like natural ones, to the casual observer, all they see is a complete and healthy smile.

The 4 Step Dental Implant Process

Because they have to be rooted to the jawbone, the dental implant process involves a couple of different steps – or four steps, to be precise. Thanks to Dr. Assadourian’s expertise, we’re able to complete the entire process in-house. That means you won’t be needing a referral to receive dental implants near you! You can learn more about the four steps below, and as always, please let us know if you have any questions.

Initial Dental Implant Consultation

A consultation might seem simple, but it’s essential for establishing your dental implant treatment plan. Dr. Assadourian and the rest of our team will perform a thorough oral exam, complete with X-rays, and review your health history. This will help us determine whether preliminary treatments (such as gum disease therapy or bone grafting) would help promote the success of your dental implants.

Dental Implant Surgery

During dental implant surgery, Dr. Assadourian will make small incisions in your gumline so she can access your jawbone. She’ll carefully place your titanium implant posts along the bone, then finish the procedure by stitching your gums. Rest assured, you’ll be supplied with a local anesthetic for this part of the process!

Dental Implant Osseointegration & Abutment Placement

After that comes the recovery period. While your mouth is healing, your jawbone and titanium implant posts will be busy with osseointegration. Basically, since titanium is biocompatible, your jawbone will fuse with the material until it becomes part of the bone. This can take anywhere from three to six months, and it’s important not to disturb your implants in the meantime.

Once osseointegration is complete, we’ll be able to attach connector pieces (a.k.a. “abutments”) to your implant posts.

Delivery of Dental Implant Restorations

Customizing a dental implant crown, bridge, or denture requires precise skill, so we leave this step to the highly qualified technicians at the dental lab. When your restoration is crafted to perfection, they’ll send it to our office, and we’ll use the abutments to connect the restoration to your implants. After making any necessary adjustments and confirming you’re satisfied with your new smile, you’re free to go and enjoy your dental implants!

Benefits of Dental Implants

The reason over 5 million implants are placed each year in the U.S. alone is that they offer several unique advantages compared to other treatments. The benefits of these prosthetics cannot be matched by any other tooth replacement solution on the market. As a permanent solution for those suffering from tooth loss, the opportunity to enjoy life with a healthier, longer-lasting, and more fully functional set of teeth is just one of the countless advantages that can be expected. Others include:

Day-to-Day Benefits

  • Nutrient-Rich Diet: Missing out on healthy, delicious foods is no longer an issue with dental implants. These prosthetics restore optimal bite force, so eating the meals and snacks you love is easier than ever before.
  • Firm Placement: Dental implants in Boston do not slip or fall out, as they fuse with the jawbone for firm placement. This ensures greater confidence when eating or speaking.
  • Greater Confidence: No matter what kind of event, presentation, or meeting you have, your dental implants will help you exude the confidence you need. Not only will they restore your facial appearance, but also your ability to speak clearly and with assurance.

Health Benefits

  • Jawbone Preservation: Once your dental implants fuse with the jawbone, they will act just like natural tooth roots, stimulating this area of the face and mouth to maintain density, stability, and a more supple look.
  • Natural Appearance: Jawbone resorption, which is known to cause facial sagging and additional tooth loss, can occur if dental implants are not placed within a certain amount of time. By having them installed, you can enjoy a more youthful appearance because of how they fill out your cheeks, all while looking completely natural.
  • No Dental Drift: When gaps in your smile remain, healthy teeth will try to shift to cover these areas. This can lead to misalignment and enamel erosion. By placing these custom prosthetics into their designated areas, you don’t have to worry about any parts of your smile moving out of place.

Long-Term Benefits

  • Long Lifespan: There are cases where dental implants have remained in place for a lifetime; however, most dentists state these prosthetics are good for at least 30+ years.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: There is no need to invest in denture adhesives or worry about regular replacement every 7-10 years because dental implants are permanent. They do not require any additional products or materials to keep them clean or in place, so while the upfront cost may be higher, they prove to be a cost-effective solution in the long run.
  • High Success Rate: The success rate of dental implants upon initial completion is 95% - a percentage that lasts for 10 years if they’re properly cared for. This means the chances of dental implant failure are rare.

Who Can Dental Implants Help?

Anyone with missing teeth can benefit from dental implants, whether their situation is due to neglect, an accident, or health issues. Dr. Smith can tailor the procedure based on each person’s needs so we can permanently close any gaps.

Missing One Tooth

An implant can be positioned between two healthy teeth and topped with a crown without disturbing them. The crown itself will be shaped and colored to match those around it, and the nearby teeth won’t need to be changed at all.

Missing Multiple Teeth

Rather than using your remaining teeth to support a bridge or partial denture, we can secure these prosthetics using just two dental implants. This not only makes them stronger, but it also allows us to preserve the rest of the teeth. Plus, this helps the prosthetics place less pressure on the sensitive gums.

Missing All Teeth

Six to eight implants will be positioned along the jaw, and a denture will simply snap onto them. Implant dentures are able to maintain their day-one fit for several years because the underlying implants actually keep the bone strong and healthy, so you won’t have to worry about your teeth starting to slip as time goes by.

Cost of Dental Implants

In order to be successful, each step of the dental implant process is individualized, which means the cost is always different. How many implants a patient needs, the type of restoration used, and whether or not any preparatory treatments are necessary can all factor into the final price. At your initial consultation, we’ll go over everything regarding cost and discuss how you can use insurance and financing to make your treatment easily affordable.
