“Dr. Smith came to my rescue when I had a nasty fall that broke the bonding on my front teeth and cracked several teeth. I called into the office first thing the next morning, and I was in the dentist chair by 10am. It was amazing – Dr. Smith and her team not only repaired the damage to my teeth but with cosmetic dentistry procedures including crowns, veneers and tooth whitening, they gave me the best smile of my life. Throughout the entire process, it was clear how invested the entire team was in not only the health of my teeth but also my overall happiness with the outcome. Their care and expertise after my accident was both reassuring and stress-free.” ~ Dana
How to Handle Common Dental Emergencies
In the event of a dental emergency, your first step is to call our office to schedule an appointment. Our dedicated team at Dental Health & Wellness Boston is here to provide you with prompt, expert care and guide you through the process for optimal outcomes. In the meantime, we recommend taking the following steps to ensure the best care for your injured teeth and overall health.
Toothaches
Rinse and floss around the tooth to remove anything that might be stuck, and if the pain persists, take some OTC medication. Place a cold compress on the face in 10-minute intervals if there is swelling.
Chipped/Broken Teeth
Recover any missing pieces of the tooth you can find and remember to bring them to our office. Use a clean rag or towel and some slight pressure to control any bleeding, and once it has stopped, place some orthodontic wax or sugarless gum over the remaining tooth so it doesn’t accidentally injure the lips or gums.
Knocked-Out Tooth
Try to make it to our office within an hour of the accident. When you pick up the tooth, only touch the crown (top part), and gently rinse it with water. The tooth must stay moist to remain viable, so have the person hold it in their cheek, or put it in a container filled with milk or saltwater.
Lost Filling/ Crown
If you still have the crown or filling, try to place it back onto the tooth, using a small dab of toothpaste if necessary. This should be considered a temporary fix, and to prevent an infection and pain, it’s best to come see us right away.
How to Prevent Dental Emergencies
Thankfully, a few commonsense practices can drastically lower your chances of experiencing a dental emergency:
- Play sports? Make sure you always wear a mouthguard!
- Don’t use your teeth to open bottles or remove tags
- Be careful when chewing on particularly hard, sticky, or crunchy foods
- Visit your dentist every six months for a checkup
- Contact us as soon as you notice a problem with your teeth
Cost of Treating Dental Emergencies
No matter the situation, acting quickly and getting treatment for a dental emergency right away is ALWAYS more comfortable and affordable compared to waiting. Delaying treatment will allow a problem to get worse, which means it may require more treatment to fix, elevating the cost. We’ll discuss your options as well as the pricing when you come to see us so you know exactly what to expect.
